Two UBC Applied Science professors named Canadian Academy of Engineering Fellows

UBC Engineering professors Dr. Mark Martinez and Dr. Tony Yang are among 55 new CAE Fellows announced today.

UBC Applied Science professors Dr. Mark Martinez and Dr. Tony Yang are among55 new Fellows elected to the Canadian Academy of Engineeringannounced today.

They were selected for “their outstanding contributions to engineering in Canada and around the world and for their service as role models in their fields and to their communities.”

TheCanadian Academy of Engineering(CAE) is the national institution through which individuals, who have made outstanding contributions to engineering in Canada, provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada and to Canadians.

Dr. Mark Martinez,Chemical and Biological Engineering

Dr. Martinez has made outstanding contributions to the pulp and paper industry, oneof Canada’s largest manufacturing industries. He has developed new knowledge for improvedoperations in papermaking and co-invented several new products and processes. He has also played a significant leadershiprole as director of several university-industry initiatives for the traditional industry as wellas the newly emerging bio-products sector. His accomplishments have contributed to thestrengthening of a vital pulp and paper industry in Canada.

Dr. Tony Yang,Civil Engineering

Dr. Yang is apreeminent leader in structural and earthquake engineering, acclaimed for hisground-breaking innovation in performance-based design, structural simulation and testing,robotic inspection and construction, and high performance, carbon-neutral and resilientinfrastructure. He has led many large research projects, collaborated with many leadingengineering firms worldwide and made significant impacts to the national and internationalcodes. His exceptional leadership and mentorship have inspired and trained numerous highlyqualified personnel. His outstanding achievements earned him numerous coveted nationaland international awards. His legacy as a visionary and influential researcher will continue toshape the future of engineering and infrastructure.

The induction ceremony for new Fellows is scheduled for June 20 in Victoria, BC.
